A day on safari

Before the plains turn gold.

Camp stirs in the dark. Coffee is poured, blankets are gathered and your guide waits beside the vehicle. Then the engine starts and the track opens ahead.

At first light, every mark in the dust feels recent. By midday, you are back at camp. As the heat lifts, the vehicle turns out again—towards evening light, long shadows and whatever the plains reveal.

The wild

No two drives are the same.

A guide slows the vehicle and points into the grass. Lion country may open ahead; cheetahs favour the plains, while leopards keep closer to riverine cover. Elephants, giraffes, hyenas and plains game move through the wider ecosystem in every season. The rest is tracks, patience and being there when the landscape changes.

The Great Migration

The herds turn north.

Wildebeest and zebra follow rain and fresh grazing across the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem. From roughly July to October, the movement reaches the northern Serengeti and the Maasai Mara.

At the Mara River, herds may gather, retreat or move without warning. A crossing follows no fixed date. Even before one begins, the scale of the migration is all around you.

Life in camp

The night is part of the safari.

The drive ends, but the Mara does not. You step onto the camp deck as lanterns are lit. Beyond them, the grass keeps moving and distant calls carry through the dark. Morning comes back to the canvas door with coffee and the first birds.

Choose canvas for closeness to the bush; choose a lodge for more permanent spaces between drives. In either, location and scale shape the stay.

The seasons

A different Mara in every season.

Rainfall shifts the timing. The full guide goes deeper.

January–February: Resident wildlife, warm days and a quieter rhythm beyond the migration rush.
March–June: Green plains and rain-darkened tracks; April and May are usually the wetter months.
July–October: Northern migration movement, the Mara River and the year's highest demand.
November–December: Short rains can bring back the green as the migration focus shifts south.
