The migration is a natural, weather-driven movement of over a million animals — not a scheduled event. Even during peak season, herds can be days away from any given river point, and crossings can happen at dawn, midday or not at all on a given day. Any itinerary that "guarantees" a crossing is overselling. What actually helps your odds is covered below.
The short version
What the migration actually is
Roughly two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle move in a continuous, rainfall-driven loop between the Serengeti and the Maasai Mara ecosystem. They arrive on the Mara side of that loop for part of the year, drawn north by grazing, and the Mara River crossings — the most photographed moments — happen as herds move back and forth across it while grazing.

The Mara Triangle and northern conservancies
Not all areas of the Mara see the same migration activity at the same time. Historically, the Mara Triangle in the west has hosted the most consistent river-crossing activity, while the northern conservancies see strong grazing herds without the same crossing drama.
